Thank you for reporting your concern to City of Cambridge via Commonwealth Connect. We have reviewed the information you provided our staff and will be investigating this issue further.
Thank you very much for your inquiry regarding regulatory signs at Fresh Pond Reservation pertinent to bicycles. Because a number of City Departments have to work together to ensure enforcement of City ordinances while providing for public safety at the Reservation, and, given the Water Board governs the rules and regulations of use, and the Fresh Pond Master Plan Advisory Board provides guidance on a signage plan, it is a complex request.
Our Rangers indicate that this is a bi-annual phenomenon. We have speeding bikes at the onset of springtime and when autumn creeps in. In each case, the bikes “self-select” out when they realize that Fresh Pond is not conducive to going fast when they have multiple frustrating experiences with dogs, kids, strollers, and groups of walkers in the way.
We are currently in conversation with all parties to see how we can provide bicyclists with the information they need to know what is expected of them while riding at Fresh Pond. We have seen with many of our other user groups, that given the information they need to know, most reasonable people comply and self regulate their behavior.
We appreciate your patience as we work through this issue.
